Activity 4

Camouflage

Part 1

Check out our social media channels including our private Facebook Group!

Camouflage is when something blends into its surroundings and is hard to see. Objects, animals and people can all camouflage! 🐙

Camouflage has much to do with vision and how we see the world around us. This activity will help you learn more about how we see, things we can and cannot see, and how animals see 👀

Let’s get started!

Step 1: Watch these TikTok videos

Colour and how our brains interpret it are huge parts of how well things blend in or stand out. In this TikTok, Ben explains how our eyes and brains interpret the colour magenta!

@learning.scitechwa Magenta does not really exist, but instead acts as an optical illusion. #magenta #colour #opticalillusions @Sara ♬ original sound - learning.scitechwa

Did you know some animals can see heat (Infared light) and UV light!? This helps them detect things that might camouflage to us. Here’s Lauren explaining a bit about heat and light.

Step 2: Watch this video

Watch this video of Mita doing some awesome science. Notice how the test tube blends into its surroundings. Is this a type of camouflage?

Step 3: Listen to this podcast episode

Have a listen to this episode of the wonder kid’s podcast. Keep an ear out for when Alyshia mentions how sauce might look to different people! Would some objects blend into the background differently depending on the person who was looking?

Step 4: Watch this Toy Tear Down episode

Watch this YouTube episode of Toy Tear Down with Alyshia. To learn more about things we can and can’t see, listen out for her description of electromagnetic radiation.

Step 5: Challenge!

Part 1: Adults – this one is for you! Watch this quick video for helpful tips to assist your child in this activity.

Part 2: Watch the activity part 1 video

Part 3: Watch the activity part 2 video

Part 4: Get creative!

Use your colouring tools to draw a monster which camouflages into a patterned or textured background in your home. Can you use 3 or more different colours?

You can print this template or draw your own!

We would love to see what you have made. Share with us a photo or video of your activity and how it works!
